Member Monday: Chicago Philharmonic
WLCO is proud to welcome Chicago Philharmonic as the newest member of its non-profit committee.
The Chicago Philharmonic Society is a collaboration of over 200 of the highest-level classical musicians performing in the Chicago metropolitan area. Governed under a groundbreaking structure of musician leadership, the Society presents concerts at venues throughout the Chicago area that cover the full spectrum of classical music, from Bach to Bernstein and beyond.
The Chicago Philharmonic has been bringing live, classical music to the neighborhood for the past two years through performances at City Winery. It’s been a great venue for Chicago Philharmonic, making the orchestra accessible to the audience in a different way than a concert hall. Performances at City Winery are unique from other Chicago Philharmonic concerts in that they are matinee and bring in a brunch crowd. The setting also allows for the musicians to experiment with the programming and have fun curating shows such as the next show coming up March 18th entitled, “Kings, Queens and Rebels” featuring pop hits with a classical twist.
“We've witnessed the massive growth in recent years of the West Loop, not only as a destination for amazing food, shopping and cultural experiences, but a real development of a community of people living and working in the neighborhood. As part of Chicago Philharmonic's mission to excite and engage diverse audiences with the beauty and power of great music, we are dedicated to connecting with the people and communities who attend and benefit from our programs. Joining the West Loop Community Organization gives Chi Phil the opportunity to expand our music offerings to this vibrant community, invite more people from the area to experience what we have to offer, and to give back by using our knowledge and experience to help other organizations in the area.”
Step inside the royal court as the Chi Phil Chamber Players present well-known tunes with a classical twist in a collection of covers arranged by Chi Phil’s own Benton Wedge.
The kings and queens of Westeros fight for control in the Game of Thrones theme, but Queen reigns supreme in Freddy Mercury’s legendary Bohemian Rhapsody. Rebels battle fiercely against the Empire in the ominous Imperial March from Star Wars, while the Dark Knight himself stalks the streets of Gotham looking for justice in Seal’s Kiss from a Rose from the Batman Forever soundtrack.
Meanwhile the king of game shows, Slumdog Millionaire, wins the day in Jai Ho, bluegrass Grammy-Award winners Nickel Creek get the classical treatment in Smoothie Song and Benton Wedge presents his own original composition. With classical versions of works that range from pop, rock, chamber music, film score and Bollywood, don’t miss your chance to join the kings and queens of classical music at City Winery.
