Member Monday: World Bicycle Relief
Tucked away on the 4th
floor of the 1KFulton building, you’ll find a passionate team working hard to
help girls access education, eradicate poverty and empower communities in rural
Africa through the Power of Bicycles. They work for World Bicycle Relief (WBR)
a global nonprofit organization headquartered in the West Loop. WBR mobilizes
people through the Power of Bicycles , envisioning a world where distance is
no longer a barrier to independence and livelihood. What started as a disaster
relief response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2005 has transformed into a
global community powered by bicycles.
Over the past 13 years, WBR has distributed more than 420,000 bicycles in 20 countries. By
distributing specially-designed, locally assembled, rugged Buffalo Bicycles,
WBR empowers people in developing countries with access to education,
healthcare and economic opportunities that can transform lives.
One of WBR’s largest corporate partners is SRAM, a bike component company who
donate office space to WBR. WBR and SRAM also share the same co-founder, FK
Day. FK’s vision of a world where distance is no longer a barrier to education,
healthcare and economic opportunity is driven by his team in Chicago and around
the world. This three minute video is an excellent visual of how bicycles are changing
On Thursday, November 8, we invite you to join us as we celebrate the Power of
Bicycles and the Power of Community! Our annual benefit, Africa in Motion, will be an evening of global impact in Chicago’s
West Loop neighborhood. Attendees will be part of a cultural immersion into
WBR’s programs in Africa via stories, sights, sounds, and tastes. WBR's Zambia
Country Director will be the keynote speaker. His personal and powerful story
of overcoming barriers as a student in Zambia and now leading those efforts for
WBR is incredibly compelling.
The benefit is open to the public and tickets can be purchased here. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mary Beth at email@example.com.
